New Techniques and Options for Trigger Point Therapy
A chronic condition called “Trigger Points” could cause many of your debilitating symptoms, such as decreased mobility, persistent pain, ringing in the ears, and tension headaches. Thankfully, here at the Seaside Rheumatology and Wellness Center, Dr. Peter Lloyd and his associates offer incredible trigger point injection (TPI) therapies that can help relieve these conditions and more.
Diagnosing Trigger Points
Before recommending trigger point injection therapy, Dr. Lloyd will examine these afflicted areas by touch. These points will often be hypersensitive nodules of muscle tissue that are unusually firm. There will likely be a sharp localized pain response, radiating discomfort, or a local twitching through touching these areas. Combined with other information such as your clinical history, Dr. Lloyd may recommend trigger point injection therapy as the best course of treatment.
Pre-Injection
Dr. Lloyd will discuss any possible complications with you before moving forward with the TPI treatments. This therapy may not be suitable for all patients. For example, those suffering from bleeding disorders should not use this treatment.
Trigger Point Injection Therapies
A trigger point is a muscle knot that doesn’t relax, creating a painful area within specific muscle groups. Often, these painful knots can even be felt just underneath the skin. Trigger points can also irritate surrounding nerves, causing referred pain or pain you feel in other parts of your body.
Dr. Lloyd and his team will insert a small hypodermic needle directly into the trigger point during the TPI procedure. The injection will contain saline (or a local anesthetic) and a corticosteroid.
After the injection, the trigger point becomes inactive, thus alleviating the pain. Often, it will take a brief course of treatment to achieve sustained relief. Injections are performed in Dr. Lloyd’s practice and only take a few minutes. During one visit, a patient can have multiple areas treated.
