Psoriatic arthritis is a specific type of arthritis that affects people with psoriasis. It is a long-term condition that causes inflammation and pain in the joints, skin, and nails. It develops in people who already have psoriasis, a chronic skin condition typically characterized by red patches of inflamed skin often covered with silvery scales. This condition can be easy to spot if you know the first signs and symptoms of psoriatic arthritis. At Seaside Rheumatology and Wellness Center, Dr. Peter Lloyd can help educate you on what to look for and when to seek assistance at his office.

What are six of the first signs of psoriatic arthritis?

The symptoms of psoriatic arthritis can help in getting a proper diagnosis of the condition. Patients with this condition may notice several of the following symptoms begin to develop:

  • Swollen fingers and toes. One of the earliest symptoms of psoriatic arthritis is swollen fingers and toes. This swelling, also known as dactylitis, can make the affected digits appear sausage-like. It can also cause stiffness and pain in these joints.
  • Nail changes. Changes in nail appearance can be another early sign of psoriatic arthritis. These changes may include pitting, discoloration, or separation from the nail bed. In some cases, nails may become thickened or ridged.
  • Joint pain and stiffness. Psoriatic arthritis commonly affects larger joints such as knees, ankles, elbows, and hips. However, it can also affect smaller joints, leading to pain and stiffness.
  • Lower back pain. In some cases, psoriatic arthritis can cause inflammation in the sacroiliac joint, which is located at the very base of the spine, resulting in lower back pain.
  • Fatigue. Many people with psoriatic arthritis experience fatigue as a symptom. This may be due to the body’s increased effort to fight off inflammation.
  • Eye problems. Inflammation caused by psoriatic arthritis can also affect the eyes, leading to concerns such as redness, blurred vision, and eye pain.
